Google: Rich Snippets Not Really For Your Homepage

Google: Rich Snippets Not Really For Your Homepage

Webmasters, publishers and SEOs love rich snippets, they give you more visibility in the search results and give something for SEOs to charge their clients for implementing (sorry for the joke, really tired).
But should you over do it? What is considered over doing it?
Personally, I hate seeing rich snippet markup on your home page. Rich snippets are all about specific details on a detailed product, event, person, location, recipe, etc. Typically that information is not found on your home page or on a category landing page but rather on the final detailed destination pages for your products, events, persons, locations, recipes and so on.
So to have rich snippets on your home page, to me, seems like over doing it.
Google's John Mueller said so too. He said in a Hacker News thread:
